What to expect

Shadow Valley is a social-emotional learning game where players help middle-school characters work through real social moments. Here's a quick look:

Your child will play Shadow Valley with a researcher, thinking out loud, then answer a few open-ended questions.

Audio and screen/gameplay are recorded; webcam is optional
Your child may skip questions or stop at any time

First, confirm eligibility

The student lives in the United States and is age 8–15. The student can converse in English. The student has a laptop, microphone, and reliable internet.

Purpose and activities. This 30-minute Google Meet session helps MEandMine understand how students experience Shadow Valley. It includes an introduction, think-aloud gameplay, and open-ended feedback.

Information and recording. We collect the parent’s name and email, the student’s first name and age, eligibility and scheduling details, session feedback, audio, and the shared screen/gameplay. Webcam video is optional.

Access and use. Only the assigned researcher can access participant and consent records. Service providers used to run the study may process information on MEandMine’s behalf. We do not sell this information or use it for advertising.

Retention. Recordings, parental consent, contact details, and the identity link will be deleted within 30 days after the overall research study is completed. A de-identified participant record may be kept with the aggregate research report for internal research and product development.

Choice. Participation is voluntary. The researcher will also ask whether your child wants to participate at the beginning of the session. Your child may skip a question or stop at any time. After a completed session, the $25 gift card will be sent to the parent or guardian.
